Artist Bio

Don MacLaughlin is a retired engineer and business owner and active cattle raiser living on his ranch near the historic city of Nocona, Texas where he operates his art gallery and studio, and conducts instructional life drawing classes one evening a week.  After retiring from his engineering business in 2000, Don took up painting and drawing with a vengeance.  He has studied with many noted artists at workshops including David Leffel, Sherrie McGraw, Carolyn Anderson, Michael Untiedt, Martin Grelle, Bruce Green, Greg Kreutz, William Schneider,  Xiang Zhang, Donna Howell-Sickles, and Michelle Torrez.

Don also studied painting and drawing  at North Central Texas College, the University of New Mexico Taos, near his summer home where his art quest began, and The Art Student’s League of Denver, where he lived temporarily as a full time student in 2009.

Don paints mostly figurative work, including cowboys, portraits, nudes, and various scenes from daily life.  He is fascinated with the stories that can be conveyed to the viewer by the characters in his paintings and focuses on that element in his composition and execution.  He paints daily at his studio/gallery where he also teaches drawing and oil painting.  He has won top awards and people’s choice awards at many north Texas art shows and has been juried into many shows including the Bosque Classic.  He was recently selected to be one of 25 Taos artists to display at a show solely for active Taos artists at the Salmagundi Club in New York City.

Mr. MacLaughlin does selected commissions. Much of his existing work is for sale at prices between $300 and $2000 at his gallery.  His web gallery may be seen at www.MacLaughlinRanch.com and you may contact him by emailing  [email protected] for price and availability of individual pieces.  His Gallery West is at 211 Clay Street in Nocona, Texas 76255.
